Cloudy Bay winery was established in 1985 and is considered one of the first five wine producers to venture into viticulture in the Marlborough region. At the time, planting vineyards in this area was nearly unthinkable. However, David Hohnen, the founder of Cloudy Bay, believed in the land’s potential to produce exceptional wine and invested in the finest plots in the region. Since then, Marlborough has become New Zealand’s leading wine region and one of the most beautiful winegrowing locations in the world. The winery was named after the region and the bay that explorer James Cook encountered during his voyage in 1770. His discovery coincided with flooding in the area, which washed large amounts of sediment into the sea. Observing the murky appearance of the water, Cook named the area Cloudy Bay. Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also represents the luxury of New Zealand on the global stage. It embodies both the value of time and the natural qualities of the land. The winery embraces a unique motto:
“The sea is our cradle, but we cannot live without the land – so the island is a compromise for our soul.”
