Cloudy Bay Winery was founded by David Hohnen 1985, founder of Margaret River Winery Cape Mentelle. After his earlier experience with Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, David knew that the future of this variety was ahead of him. He traveled through the NZ and explored the Marlborough region with the help of locals, to find the appropriate location for vineyards. Soon thereafter, wineries and vineyards were built at that place. Cloudy Bay is among the top five wineries established in the Marlborough region.

The Pinot Noir fruit was all de-stemmed before being gravity fed into the open topped fermentation vessels. The grape skins were gently plunged with an average of 18 days skin contact. After fermentation the wines were matured in French oak for 11 months, of which 35% was new.
