Gin takes its name from <genievre> or <genever> the French and Dutch work respectively for the juniper berries used in the distillation process. The best gins have benefited from the discoveries of the great explorers, since the spices they brought back from far-flung corners of the world were incorporated into the distillation process with the juniper berries in order to enhance the range of flavors. Gin and its ancestor genever are grain spirits made from rye, wheat and malted barley that are then redistilled with juniper berries to give then their signature taste. While genever keeps the malted flavor of the grain (rye and malted barley), gin takes on the aromas and flavors of the juniper berries and spices used in its production. Carefully made gin displays remarkable refinement and complexity, combining the freshness of juniper and the exotic nature of spices like nutmeg, coriander and grains of paradise.

citadelle ginCitadelle Gin has a delicate and fragrant nose of fresh flowers, jasmine, honeysuckle and cinnamon. After a few moments, stronger, more herbaceous aromas of anise, grains of paradise and cinnamon develop in a most remarkable way. The appetizing bouquet is reminiscent of gardens in springtime. On the palate, juniper gives way to a voluptuous complexity redolent of fresh flowers, leading into an elegant, round and highly refined finish.

Citadelle Réserve

citadelle reserve ginMatured for several months in old oak casks, Citadelle Reserve marvelously combines the freshness and complexity of Citadelle Gin with the refinement of old, cask-aged spirits. Our cellar-master does not consider the gin ready for bottling until a perfect balance has been struck between freshness and cask flavors. Vintage 2010 is a beautiful pale gold color and is in the same vein as our Vintage 2009. It shows subtle and delicate floral notes revealed by the addition of violet and iris and spicy notes from the grains of paradise. It also shows flavors of flowers, cinnamon with a hint of wood and is extremely delicate through the finish. It retains the aromatic palette and the crisp vividness of Citadelle Gin that is enriched with a soft fullness. The fresh and spicy aroma of juniper, citrus and star anise are still very present in the scent as well as the taste. It shows a unique depth and finish that only cask aging can provide and gives Citadelle Gin Reserve 2010 a beautiful ‘fondu’ – meaning a balance and good integration of all the botanicals used for Citadelle.
